'Protected' | Original drawing
Original drawing by Annalena Ouwens
Male lion resting his head on his cub, who looks straight at the viewer.
About the piece:
A lion rests his chin on the head of his cub. He looks ahead, quiet and watchful, while the cub leans into him with its eyes half closed.
Strength is not what this drawing is about. It is about what strength is for. The father’s mane wraps around the little one like shelter. He doesn’t have to do anything dramatic to protect his cub. He only has to be there, steady and close.
I find that deeply inspiring. The cub’s innocence lets it rest completely, because it trusts the one beside it. That kind of protection is quiet.
The piece is drawn in soft black-and-white pastel, built layer by layer from dark to light, so the two figures seem to emerge together from the shadow, as one.
